Pedersen: Syria facing several security and economic challenges

UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said in a statement ” We are experiencing a highly significant moment in the development of the political situation in Syria.”

He indicated that the Syrian president has pledged to work on forming an inclusive government that reflects the diversity of his country.

“The interim authorities in Syria have repeatedly stressed commitment to ensuring that the new Syria will be for everyone.” Pedersen added.

He pointed out that the commitment of the interim authorities aligns with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, but implementation remains crucial.

“We look forward to turning these commitments into concrete actions and we are ready to work in a meaningful and constructive manner,” Pedersen also said.

“All Syrians I have met have welcomed the official commitments from the interim government. I welcome the opening of direct channels by the interim authorities with the Syrian Democratic Forces,” he said.

He made it clear that the security situation remains complex, and the interim authorities continue to strengthen their presence to build a national army.

“There are threats posed by ISIS and security vacuum in some areas, and achieving stability must be a priority, Pedersen said, noting worrying reports of violations by the security authorities within the interim government.”

He pointed out that authorities must provide guarantees through a comprehensive transitional justice process in the country.

“The Syrians have expressed an urgent need to achieve stability in their country. Significant support is needed for Syria, particularly in terms of investments for reconstruction ,” he added.

The UN Special Envoy said “the challenges facing Syria are numerous and diverse, especially regarding security and the economy.”

Pedersen urged the Security Council to emphasize the necessity of Israel’s withdrawal from the disengagement zone with Syria.

He concluded by stressing that it is essential to ensure the inclusion of all parts of Syria in the political transition process.
