Pedersen stresses the need to ease sanctions on Syria

UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen expressed his appreciation for the intensive discussions he held the day before yesterday with President Ahmad Al-Sharaa in Damascus, which focused on all aspects of the ongoing political transitions in the country.

The UN website quoted Pedersen as saying in a statement yesterday that he discussed with Al-Sharaa the importance of a transparent framework for the process of selecting and electing an interim People’s Assembly, as well as all subsequent steps of the political transition.

He stressed the need for continued efforts to ease sanctions on Syria, as the Syrian people need prosperous economic future.

Separately, Pedersen reiterated his condemnation of the repeated Israeli attacks and interventions in Syria, expressing his appreciation for the interim authorities’ commitment to respecting agreements with “Israel”.
