Pedersen: Political Solution in Syria Should be Based on International Resolution No. 2254

NEW YORK, (ST)- Geir Pedersen, the UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria, has affirmed the need to find a political settlement in Syria based on the Security Council Resolution No. 2254 which calls for preserving and respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and for supporting a Syrian-led political process facilitated by the United Nations.

In a statement to the Iranian News Agency (IRNA), Pedersen said “I repeatedly stressed in the reports I have submitted to the Security Council that the starting point must be respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” pointing out that “this is the only solution that ends the crisis”.

The UN envoy expressed hope that the recently created committee for discussing the Syrian constitution will hold its first meeting within the coming few weeks.
