Nur-Sultan, (ST) – The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, announced today that the peacekeeping forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) have successfully completed their tasks. He indicated that their withdrawal from his country will begin within two days.
In a speech to parliament members, the Kazakh president said that “the withdrawal of peacekeeping units will begin within two days and this will not take more than 10 days.” He stressed that “the attempt to carry out a coup in Kazakhstan has failed in general, the acute phase of the anti-terrorist operation has passed and the situation in all regions is stable.”
“The main mission of the CSTO peacekeeping forces has been successfully completed,” Tokayev said during a session broadcast live on state television.
This comes after nearly a week of unrest, by far the worst violence in the 30-year independent history of the former Soviet state.
