Patriarch Yazigi at Iftar Meal: Syrian People Longing for Peace to Prevail in Syria

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Patriarch of Antioch and All East for Greek Othodox Youhanna X Yazigi has stressed that the Syrian people are longing for peace to prevail in their country as they are shaking the dust of wars and terrorism.

During an Iftar meal held in honor of Patriarch Irinej of Serbia, who is visiting Syria, Patriarch Yazigi said that the Christian-Islamic fraternity is part of the history of this land.

He called on Patriarch Irinej to convey the amity of the Syrian people to the Serbian people and their sacred church and to urge the Serbians to pray for peace in Syria, for the good of all East and for the release of the two kidnapped archbishops Youhanna Ibrahim and Boulos Yazigi whose cause has been ignored by the international community.

He congratulated the Syrian Moslems on the coming Eid al-Fitr.

On his part, Syria’s Grand Mufti Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun affirmed in a statement that Syria will stay strong and unbroken in front of its enemies thanks to the Syrian people’s cohesion and unity in defense of their country, the land of peace and amity.

He urged Patriarch Irinej to convey to all churches of Europe a message saying that Syria will continue to be one family,

“The Syria welcoming you today has lost a lot of blood, because of the conspiracy hatched by over 100 countries against it,” the Mufti said, stressing that thanks to the steadfastness of the Syrian people, the bravery of the Syrian army and the wisdom of the Syrian leadership, Syria has triumphed over terrorism and this victory serves the interests of the region and the world.

The guest Serbian patriarch, on his part, expressed happiness over the amity he noticed among all spectra of the Syrian people, affirming that Syria’s message of love must be conveyed to the entire world.

He voiced solidarity with the Syrian people in the face of aggressors.
