Islamabad (ST) – The Pakistani authorities evacuated about 100 thousand people due to the floods in the eastern Punjab state of the country today.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted the spokesman of the state, Farooq Ahmed, as saying: “The waters flooded hundreds of villages and destroyed thousands of acres of agricultural crops, after the Stelj River overflowed since last Sunday.”
He explained that tens of thousands of people were evacuated and moved to safer places.
In turn, the Pakistani National Disaster Management Authority warned that the expected monsoon rains could intensify the floods in the coming days.
Last year, Pakistan witnessed unprecedented monsoon rains and floods that flooded about a third of the country, causing heavy human and material losses.
