PA Speaker Affirms Need to Unify International Efforts to Combat Terrorism

GENEVA-The General Assembly of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) yesterday resumed the meetings of its 131st session in Geneva with the participation of the Syrian delegation led by the People’s Assembly (PA)Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Lahham.

Al-Lahham discussed with his counterparts, participating in the IPU meetings, ways of reactivating parliamentary relations and coordinating efforts to enhance security, stability and peace in the Middle East.

On the sideline of the Geneva meeting, al-Lahham had talks with Speaker of the Iranian Shoura Council Ali Larijani on the role the IPU can play in support of international legitimacy and national sovereignty of states and in mobilizing international efforts to combat the takfiri terrorism hitting Syria and Iraq.

The two sides stressed that international organizations, particularly the IPU should support and deepen countries’ right to protect their sovereignty and independence, should support peaceful solutions to the internal crises in these countries and should reject all kinds of foreign intervention in other countries affairs.

Both officials reiterated that countries taking part in the US-led coalition against the terrorist organization called the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL) must commit themselves to the Security Council’s resolutions relating to fighting terrorism and must respect the international law and countries’ sovereignty.

Another meeting between al-Lahham and the Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Barri dealt with the danger to which Syria and Lebanon are being exposed because of the terrorist acts committed by ISIL, al-Nousra Front and other terrorist organizations in Syria and Iraq.

The PA speaker had talks also with Andrieh Klimov, Deputy Chairman of the International Affairs Committee at the Russian Federal Association Union Council on methods of boosting the Syrian-Russian relation.

Al-Lahham expressed Syria’s appreciation over Russia’s supportive stance towards Syria particularly in the country’s confrontation of terrorism.

On his part, Klimov reiterated Russia’s support for the Syrian people and government in their fight against takfiri terrorism, pointing out that combating terrorism should be done with the participation of all concerned parties and within the framework of the Security Council and the international laws.
