DAMASCUS- Speaker of the People’s Assembly (PA) on Wednesday announced that the PA received from the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) the first presidential candidacy application submitted by MP Maher Abdul Hafeez Hajjar.
Hajjar’s bid for presidency comes a day after President of the Higher Constitutional Court (SCC) Adnan Zreik had announced that the court was ready to receive candidacy applications for the post of President of the Syrian Arab Republic starting from Tuesday until May 1st, 2014.
MP Maher Abdul Hafeez Hajjar, born in Aleppo in 1968, submitted the application to the SCC attached with documents required to run in the coming presidential elections.
In accordance with the rules of the Syrian constitution, the SCC Law and the General Elections Law, the SCC informed the People’s Assembly of Hajjar’s candidacy application so as MPs can practice their constitutional right in supporting this candidate or not.
Hajjar has got a diploma in Linguistics from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Aleppo University. He joined the Syrian Communist Party in 1984.
In 2000, he split the party and formed an interim leadership for the Communists in Aleppo. In 2003, he, along with some Communist leaders, formed the “National Committee of the Syrian Communists’ Unity” and had been one of its leaders until the committee changed its name in 2011 to be “the Popular Will Party” in which he was the Secretary of the Party’s council.
Hajjar ran in the People’s Assembly’s elections of 2007, but didn’t win.
In 2012, and amid the crisis in Syria, he again ran for the PA elections for Aleppo within the list of the “Popular Front for Change and Liberation” and he won.
Hajjar is married and has got only a daughter.
Two days ago, the PA announced that presidential elections were set for May 28th, 2014 for the Syrians abroad and for June 3rd, 2014 for the Syrians resident in the country.
