Obama Says Political Settlement only Option to Solve Crisis in Syria

HANNOVER-U.S. President Barack Obama on Sunday stressed that political settlement was the only option to solve the crisis in Syria.

“We continue to agree that the only real durable solution is a political solution that moves Syria towards an inclusive government that represents all Syrians,” Obama said during a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Honnover, according to Reuters.

He reiterated the need to boost the cessation of hostilities in Syria and acknowledged that it is very difficult and impractical to establish so-called safe zones in the country.

On Friday, White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said that securing a “safe zone” in Syria would be complicated to implement and would not be in line with Washington’s national security interests, Sputnik reported.

Earlier on Sunday and in a statement to BBC News, Obama ruled out deploying US ground troops in Syria.

“It would be a mistake for the United States or Britain to send in ground troops to Syria,” he said

He also said he did not think the so-called “Islamic State” would be defeated in his last nine months of office.
