Novikov: 10 thousand wanted on terrorism charges in the Commonwealth of Independent States CIS

Moscow, ST- The head of the CIS counter-terrorism center, Andrei Novikov, said that more than 10,000 people were on the CIS wanted list on charges of terrorism and extremism.

“The CIS’s Counterterrorism Center database contains detailed information on about 10,000 people wanted for terrorist or extremist-related crimes, including more than 5,000 who have participated in hostilities as part of terrorist and extremist organizations or in  illegal armed  units from non-CIS countries.” ,Novikov said in an interview with TASS.

Novikov said  that in the past year, more than 200 people have been arrested on the basis of data provided by the Anti-Terrorism Center of the League for  their involvement in terrorist acts since 2015, and 300 others have been charged with financing terrorist activities.

According to the Counter-Terrorism Center, Russia has classified 31 groups as terrorists and 73 others as extremists, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have classified 20 and 18 organizations respectively as terrorist and extremist, while  Uzbekistan has banned 22 terrorist groups and Kazakhstan has designated 17 and 6 terrorist and extremist organizations respectively.

The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is an international Eurasian organization of 12 former Soviet republics based in Minsk, aiming to create cooperation covering trade, finance, law, security and counter-terrorism.
