No One Can Salvage Syria As President Bashar al-Assad, Says Velayati

Tehran –United Nations Security Council and governments in the region should help resolve the crisis in  Syria and it seems no one can salvage Syria except for President Bashar al-Assad, Chairman of the Strategic Studies of the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayatisaid.

Velayati made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Spain Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo.

It is about four years that the interference of some western governments as well as regional governments has destabilized Syria, Velayati said.

He highlighted Iran’s stand about the current developments in Syria, saying that from the beginning of the crisis Iran has always emphasized that the issue should be resolved with the hands of Syrian government.

Presently all are now witnessing a confused state near European border due to outflux of refugees, Velayati said.

Iran has always called that the Syrian crisis should be resolved through dialogue in presence of Syrian government, he said.

Unfortunately, some governments called for toppling of President Bashar al-Assad which proved to be a grave mistake as the world has reached the conclusion that the crisis in Syriashould be resolved through dialogue and there is no room for military operation, Velayati said.

Iran, Russia call for political solution to Syria, Yemen crises

On the other hand in Moscow,Iran and Russia have renewed their calls for a negotiated settlement to the crises in Syria and Yemen saying UN Charter and international norms shall be considered as a solution, official sources said.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abollahian and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov talked on phone about developments in the Middle East notably Syria and Yemen, Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

They underlined finding a political way to the settlement of the crises in Syria and Yemen based on UN Charter and international norms, it added.

The statement did not provide details of the talks, but Iran and Syria hold common stand on the crises in the two Arab countries.
