No indications that another earthquake will occur in the region, says Al-Asiri

Damascus, (ST)  – Dr. Muhammad Al-Asiri, head of the Syrian Astronomical Society and Director of the Syrian Astronomical Observatory has stated that the energy released from earthquake that struck Syria at dawn last Monday has relaxed the Arabian tectonic plate and actually protected all the faults on the plate from another devastating earthquake.

Al-Asiri indicated in an interview with SANA that the earthquake occurred and ended, and it is unlikely that another earthquake of the same strength will recur.

He pointed out that the coming period will witness the stability of the plate after the end of weak aftershocks, and that there is a large energy that was emptied which protected the region from a hugr earthquake measuring more than 8 on the Richter scale.

About the possibility of predicting the place and time of the earthquake, the researcher Al-Asiri indicated that predicting the occurrence of an earthquake is unscientific, and until now we rely on indicators that precede or follow the earthquake, which do not give a chance only a few seconds before its occurrence. He added that there are historical studies that statistically indicate the presence of an earthquake every period time estimated at hundreds of years, and this period was the date of this earthquake

Dr. Al-Asiri stated that people circulated the idea of a tsunami, which is unlikely in our region as it needs a devastating earthquake in the heart of the sea that exceeds 8 degrees on the Richter scale.

“The fact that the Mediterranean Sea is a semi-closed and small sea and therefore does not allow the formation of high tsunami waves,” he clarified.
