DAMASCUS, (ST)- The People’s Assembly (PA) yesterday approved the general elections bill and adopted it as a law following several-day discussions that tackled the bill’s articles one by one.
Assessing the importance of the new law, Najm al-Ahmad, the Justice Minister, said “it is a qualitative step as it tasks the judiciary with supervising the entire election process to get effective judicial monitoring.”
The minister told SANA that the independent judicial authority in Syria, according to the law, would be responsible for monitoring and running the election process with complete neutrality, transparency and objectivity stressing that the Supreme Judicial Council “won’t allow any party to interfere in the work of the judiciary.
Al-Ahmad affirmed that by adopting the new elections law, Syria goes further in deepening and enhancing the principles of democracy through which Syria will be on a par with world’s most developed countries.
The minister asserted that Syria will be an example to be followed as regards holding the coming presidential and parliamentary elections in terms of citizens’ utmost freedom to choose their representatives through ballot boxes.
During the PA session, Deputy Premier for Services Affairs and Minister of Local Administration Omar Ghalawanji said the ministry had provided all requirements of the election process due in summer.
