Need to Augment Syrian-Armenian Parliamentary Relations Underscored

The head and members of Syrian-Armenian parliamentary Friendship Association visited today the Armenian Embassy in Damascus with a view to enhancing relations between the two countries, according to a press release issued by the Syrian People’s Assembly [parliament]

The press release, obtained by the Syriatimes e-newspaper, said that the head of the association, Dr. Nora Arissian expressed the Syrian people’s appreciation over the Armenian people’s honorable stances towards Syria.

“The visit aims to stress the strong ties between the two countries under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad and his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan,” Dr. Arissian said.

On their part, members of the association underscored the need to augment parliamentary relations between Syria and Armenia, calling for establishing an Armenian cultural center in Damascus for cultural exchange.

They also congratulated the Ambassador of Armenia to Syria Arshak Poladianon on the election of Armen Sargsyan as the new president of Armenia.

On his part, the Ambassador expressed his happiness for the visit paid by the head and members of the Syrian-Armenian association to the embassy’s headquarters, referring to the strong historic relations between Syria and Armenia.

He called for developing these relations, especially among parliamentarians of the two friendly countries.

The ambassador indicated that the idea of establishing an Armenian cultural center in Damascus emerged in 2010 but the implementation was delayed because of the crisis in Syria started in 2011.

The Syrian-Armenian Association is composed of 11 MPs including Dr. Nora Arissian [the head of the Association]. It was founded in March 2017 in the Syrian parliament, while the second association was founded in the Armenian parliament in July 2017.
