Nebenzia: Western accusations against Syria about using chemical weapons reminiscent of the allegations promoted against Iraq 18 years ago

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United nations Vasily Nebenzya has stressed that the western accusations against Syria about using chemical weapons are misleading and reminiscent of the allegations promoted against Iraq 18 years ago, warning against repeating this scenario which led to the destruction of Iraq.

“In 2003, the Ex-US Secretary of State Colin Powell, presented a vivid description of what he called the horrific crimes of the Iraqi regime and it violations of the system of  the non-proliferation of Weapons and Mass Destruction. I think it is not necessary to remind that even the parties that directly participated in this lie have admitted that there weren’t any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq,” Nebenzia said during an online Security Council session on Friday.

“Our western partners are now making every effort to convince the world that Syria is guilty of all grave sins, including violating the system of the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction,” he added.
