Nebenzia: Transferring aid to Syria across the border is a violation of international law

On June 30th, Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, affirmed that his country does not support the mechanism of transferring humanitarian aid to Syria across the border.

Nebenzia said that this mechanism constitutes a complete violation of the principles of providing humanitarian aid and the provisions of international law.

“We have said from the beginning that the statements of our partners about resuming  work on the border crossings is a bad idea, noting that the mechanism for transferring aid across the border completely violates the principles of providing humanitarian aid and the provisions of international law,” Russia Today channel quoted Nebenzia as saying during a meeting of the UN Security Council.

Nebenzia said: “ When last year we extended the cross-border transfer of aid for an additional year until July 10, we emphasized that in addition to that, support must be ensured across the lines of contact in Syrian territory.”

It is noteworthy that the UN Security Council adopted Resolution No. 2165, which authorized humanitarian convoys heading to Syria to cross the border on July 14, 2014, and its validity has been extended annually since then.

Nebenzia had called on the United States to immediately return to the agreement signed between Iran and the Five Plus One group on the Iranian nuclear program.

On May 8, 2018, former US President Donald Trump announced his country’s withdrawal from the nuclear agreement between Iran and the five plus one group and the restoration of sanctions against Tehran in defiance of the will of the international community.
