Berlin, (ST) – Germany’s permanent representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Rudiger Konig announced that the alliance will not respond to the requests of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for help because Kiev is not a member of it. He said that the assistance can come within the framework of the actions of individual countries.
Commenting on Zelensky’s comments about his request for assistance from NATO, Konig told Der Spiegel newspaper that Ukraine is not a member of NATO, so there are no obligations for collective self-defense, and we also do not want the alliance to take an active part in hostilities.
Konig stressed that NATO’s entry into the conflict would lead to a major war. He considered that the assistance provided to Kiev by its Western allies in the alliance should come within the framework of the actions of individual countries and not the alliance itself.
The New York Times reported that NATO will not allow Ukraine to join it until the end of the Russian special operation, while experts believe that the possibility of Ukraine joining the alliance is currently not possible, and it will take months if not years.
