To promote and develop environmental work, the first of November of each year was adopted as a National Environment Day to review the goals, annual plans and strategy for the protection of the Syrian environment, which has been subjected to many unfair acts over the past years.

In a statement to SANA correspondent, the director of biodiversity at the Ministry of local administration and Environment, Engineer Bilal al-Hayek, explained that this year the National Environment Day comes under the slogan of Climate Change and the Environment in order to consecrate the renewed desire and will of the Syrian society in construction and development and increase the level of environmental awareness among various individuals and groups of society.

“Within this framework, the ministry is working at the level of all governorates, with the participation of the directorates of environment, education, agriculture, health and non-governmental environmental associations to activate the celebration of this day through concerted efforts to organize a set of environmental awareness activities and events aimed at raising environmental awareness among community members, consolidating the concepts of voluntary work and environmental citizenship, and consolidating the role of society in changing patterns of behavior and negative habits in dealing with the environment,” al-Hayek added.

He stressed that awareness-raising meetings and environmental seminars will be held,  public field environmental campaigns will be implemented, including hygiene and afforestation campaigns, in addition to  markets and exhibitions of environmental and natural products, scientific exhibitions including environmental paintings and recycled environmental materials.
