Moscow: Suspension of Twitter Account of the Russian Embassy in Syria Flagrant Violation of Free Speech

MOSCOW-The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Twitter had suspended the account of the Russian Embassy in Syria without explanation, accusing the company of censorship and of committing flagrant violation of freedom of speech.

The ministry demanded that the page be brought back online immediately.

According to Russian media outlets, the embassy’s account went offline after it posted a video that cited statements by the Russian military criticizing the so-called “White Helmets”, a group that claims to be an NGO working in the humanitarian field in Syria, but it has been proved that it has links to terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda and others.

The White Helmets operate only in areas controlled by terrorists fighting against the Syrian government.

On July 29, Chief of the Main Operations Directorate of Russia’s General Staff, Colonel General Sergei Rudskoi, said according to Tass, that militants in Syria had launched a massive campaign to discredit Russia’s operation in the Idlib de-escalation zone. In particular, the White Helmets use fake videos to spread disinformation about Russia’s alleged airstrikes against civilians in Syria, he noted.
