Moscow supports establishing WMD-free zone in the Middle East

MOSCOW- Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Vladimir Yermakov has stressed that his country supports the project of establishing a Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Sputnik quoted Yermakov as saying in a press conference on Wednesday that it is very important to depend on the experience of the already established areas that have become free of mass destruction weapons”, pointing out that Moscow positively views the outcome of the recently held New York Conference on the establishment of a WMD-free zone in the Middle East.

 A conference on establishing a WMD-free zone in the Middle East was held between November 18th and 22nd in New York with the participation of several Middle East countries in addition to Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.

He said that New York conference’s statement included an open invitation to the Middle East countries to join this project.

Yermakov also said that Washington sought to hinder other countries’ efforts to hold a United Nations conference on establishing a Middle East zone free of weapons of mass destruction.

The second session of the conference is scheduled for November 16-20, 2020.
