Moscow reaffirms that Syria has fulfilled its obligations towards the OPCW

New York (ST): Russia has reiterated that Syria has fulfilled all its obligations towards the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons regarding the so-called “chemical file”, noting that Western countries continue to use this issue as a tool to pressure the Syrian government.

During a video session of the UN Security Council, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia, said, according to Novosti news agency, that Syria voluntarily joined the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and fulfilled the basic conditions under the Chemical Weapons Convention and disposed of its entire stockpile and destroyed the relevant production facilities since the year 2014 and this was confirmed by the OPCW more than once.

Nebenzia pointed out that some countries continue to use the “chemical file” as a tool to pressure the Syrian state and direct “serious accusations” against it again and again, noting that the number of evidence of fabrication, manipulation and violations within the technical secretariat of the  OPCW has exceeded the “dangerous level.”

Syria has repeatedly affirmed that it will not use chemical weapons, has disposed of its  entire chemical stockpile and destroyed the relevant production facilities, which was confirmed by the Head of the Joint Mission to Eliminate Chemical Weapons in Syria, Sigrid Kaag, in her briefing to the Security Council in June 2014,  and confirmed by documents issued by the Technical Secretariat of the OPCW, the latest of which is the 85th monthly report by the Director-General issued on the 26th of last October.
