Moscow, Iran Slam Trump’s Irresponsible Statements on Occupied Syrian Golan

Russia and Iran have condemned US President Donald Trumps’ statement on Thursday in which he announced his intention to recognize “Israel’s full sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian Golan.

In Moscow, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media on Friday that Trump’s statement that Washington should recognize “Israel’s sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian Golan may destabilize the situation in the Middle East, Itar Tass reported.

“Such calls may considerably destabilize the already strained situation in the Middle East,” he said. “In any case the idea as such by no means works for the tasks and goals of the Middle East settlement. It’s the other way round.”

“At the moment it’s just a call. May it remain so,” Peskov added.

Earlier, Trump tweeted that the US should recognize what he called “Israel’s full sovereignty” over the Syrian Golan.

Zakharova: Trump’s Statement on Syria’s Golan Irresponsible

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, on her part, described as irresponsible US President Donald Trump’s statement that Washington should recognize Israel’s full sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

“Such statements being made today are irresponsible in our opinion. They are capable of causing negative effects [on the process of Middle East settlement],” Zakharova said on the Rossiya-24 round-the-clock television channel on Friday. “They may cause still greater destabilization in the region.”

Zakharova, according to Tass, recalled that the world community should see its main task in stabilizing the Middle East, and not in triggering new wars and exacerbating the already existing conflicts.

A member of the Russian Federation Council also slammed Trump’s pledge, saying “Russia will never recognize “Israeli sovereignty” over the Syrian Golan.

Oleg Morozov said Trump’s move is aimed at splitting the Arab world and undermine Syria and its partnership with Russia.

Zarif: Trump continues to give what is not his to racist Israel

In Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed shock at Trump’s plan.

“All shocked by @realDonaldTrump continuing to try to give what is not his to racist Israel: first Al-Quds & now Golan” Zarif tweeted from Istanbul where he was attending the emergency OIC meeting, according to press TV.

“This illegal and unacceptable recognition does not change the fact that it belongs to Syria,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said in Tehran.

“The Zionist regime, as an occupying regime, has no sovereignty over any Islamic and Arab lands and its occupation (of the Golan) and acts of violation should be swiftly brought to an end,” he said.

Qassemi said the only solution to the Golan issue is to end the Israeli occupation. He said Trump’s “personal and rash decisions reveal yet another reality of US policies that are dangerous to the entire world, and will particularly push this volatile region to successive crises.”

The Islamic Republic, he said, “will closely monitor all future developments in the region and continue its cooperation and consultations with the Syrian government and other countries to take appropriate measures.”

The Golan is a Syrian land occupied by Israel in a war in 1967. In 1981, the Israeli occupation unilaterally declared “sovereignty” over the Golan, but, the UN Security Council declared the annexation null and void in its Resolution 497 of December 17, 1981.
