Moscow (ST): Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed her country’s hope that the United States would fulfill its promises and close Guantanamo prison.
TASS news agency quoted Zakharova as saying in a press briefing today “We express our hope that the new US administration will fulfill the promises made by Washington earlier, to immediately close Guantanamo prison and allow its prisoners to receive fair, independent and impartial trials”.
Last Tuesday, UN human rights experts called on the administration of US President-elect Joe Biden to close the notorious Guantanamo prison as soon as possible.
At the beginning of his presidency in 2009, former US President Barack Obama signed a decision to close the aforementioned prison, but his administration for eight years did not fulfill this issue. The outgoing President Donald Trump made a decision in January 2018 to keep the prison open, which was condemned by human rights defenders.
