Moscow: Calls for Establishing “No Fly Zone” in Syria Unacceptable

MOSCOW, (ST)-  Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov has stressed that calls for establishing a “no fly zone” in Syria are unacceptable.

In a statement to the Russian “Novosti” news agency on Thursday, Ryabkov said claims that enforcing no fly zone would contribute to stability in Syria are completely void because the results of implementing such procedures in other parts of the world were destructive.

Regarding the Russian-American agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Syria, Ryabkov stressed the need to find a way that guarantees that the agreement is implemented by all parties not only one party including all the groups which are backed by the United States and some European and Gulf states.

Earlier in the day, Ryabkov told reporters that the US suggestion to impose a no fly zone in some Syrian areas was ineffective and invalid, pointing out that such a suggestion is inapplicable.

Abdullahian warns of scenarios aiming to weaken Syria’s unity and sovereignty

Commenting on the US proposal, Iran’s Shura Council Assistant Speaker for international affairs Hussein Amir Abdullahian said Washington’s suggestion to impose ban on aviation activities in some Syrian areas “aims at weakening and violating Syria’s unity and sovereignty.”

Abdullahian stressed that the “Syrian government has been serious about delivering humanitarian aid to all Syrian areas.”

He reiterated the need that the Syrian government and the United Nations should reach a special mechanism to safely send humanitarian aid to Aleppo in the light of the terrorist groups’ irresponsible stance on this issue.

Churkin: Lavrov-Kerry talks on Syria achieved progress

Meantime, Russia’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his US counterpart John Kerry have “achieved progress” during their talks on Syria in new York.

Itar Tass quoted Churkin as saying that “talks continue between the two sides and the two ministers were expected to hold another meeting later today.”
