More than 3000 Candidates Run for Parliamentary Elections Due Tomorrow

 DAMASCUS, (ST)- Syria’s People’s Assembly (PA) elections kick off tomorrow amorning amid competition among more than 3000 candidates from all Syrian provinces running for 250 seats in the Syrian Parliament.

Some 7000 Polling centers across the country will open at 7:00 a.m. local time and close at 7:00 p.m. announcing the end of the electoral process. The time of process can be extended five more hours by a decision from the Higher Judicial Committee for Elections (HJCE).

 The judicial subcommittees for the PA elections in the Syrian provinces have announced complete readiness for holding the electoral process.

Earlier, HJCE affirmed that all preparations for holding the upcoming elections of the People’s Assembly and the logistic procedures have been completed for polling stations in all the country’s provinces.

Hisham Shaar, the HJCE Chairman, stressed keenness on a transparent and honest electoral process that helps voters cast their ballots easily.

President Bashar Al-Assad on February 22nd issued Decree No. 63 for 2016 calling for holding parliamentary elections in the country on April 13.

In a statement to Sputnik News, the HJCE Chairman said that “a large number of candidates have submitted documents and  their number originally surpassed 11,500. But by the Election Day, some 3,500 candidates remain to compete for the people’s Assembly seats.”

He added that “the polling stations will open everywhere apart from the provinces of Idlib and Raqqa where Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organizations have control.”
