More than 134 countries, including Syria, take part in the G77+China summit in Havana

Havana – Achieving higher growth rates and attaining social justice, prosperity in the entire world requires hard constant work, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said during the opening ceremony of the G77+China summit which kicked off on Friday in Havana with the participation of 134 countries, including Syria.

The Syrian delegation to the summit is led by Minister of Finance Kinan Yaghi and it comprises Head of the Planning and International Cooperation Commission Fadi Salti Al-Khalil. The Syrian Embassy in Havana also takes part in the activities of this summit.

Canel noted the challenges facing peoples due to the unfair international standards, clarifying that the G77 bloc, which has been built based on friendship and partnership, is determined to confront and overcome these challenges.

He affirmed the important of hard work as to confront climate change and its disastrous impacts on countries of the world.

He condemned the continuity of the unjust sanctions that have been imposed by the United States on Cuba for decades, calling for lifting these inhuman measures.

The Syrian delegation is due to hold meetings with a number of officials from Cuba and the participating delegations with the aim of discussing support for the just causes and rights of South American countries, including the right to have access to technologies and modem sciences and to employ these technologies and sciences in achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

The Group of 77 was established on June 15, 1964 within the Non-Aligned Movement, and its first major meeting was in Algeria in 1967.

The group began with 77 founding members in addition to China, which has supported the group since its foundation. The first statement in 1966 was called the G77 and China, and it expanded to include 134 countries, which represents about two-thirds of the member states of the United Nations. This makes it the largest alliance of developing countries within the United Nations.

Cuba is currently the president of the group.
