MONTREUX, GENEVA (ST)_ Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, who is also head of the Syrian official delegation to the Geneva2 conference Walid al-Moallim met at his residence today, Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN envoy to Syria.
Yesterday evening, Moallim met with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the conference.
The two sides discussed ways to make the conference a success.
al-Moallim stressed that fighting terrorism is a priority for the Syrian people, for launching the political process and dialogue between the Syrians without external interference.
Moallim indicated that attendees of the conference do not represent”the Syrian opposition”and that countries supporting them should stop meddling in order to allow the Syrians, who represent the national opposition within Syria to work for the restoration of security and stability and that the dialogue should be brought to Syria because the Syrian people are the decision-maker of their own future.
From his part, the Chinese minister stressed his country ‘s position concerning the crisis in Syria and that external solutions cannot be imposed on the Syrian people, who enjoy the exclusive right to determine their future and that China would support what is unanimously accepted by the Syrian parties without any external interference and that China welcomes the participation of all segments of the Syrian opposition, with the exception of those who practice terrorism.
The Chinese minister also stressed that his country would continue economic cooperation with Syria.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Butheina Shaaban, Political and Media Advisor at the Republic’s Presidency, Dr. Faisal al-Miqdad Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Ahmad Arnous Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants and the Chinese delegation accompanying the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
