DAMASCUS, (ST) _ The People’s Assembly (PA) guidance and foreign affairs committees yesterday discussed with Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Dr. Faisal al-Miqdad latest developments concerning the ongoing crisis in Syria.
Chairman of the PA guidance committee Dr. Walid Saleh pointed the great role played by the Syrian army in the field to defeat terrorism and restore security and stability to the country and the role of the Syrian diplomatic role in defending Syria people interests and supporting the achievements of the army.
Miqdad, for his part, spoke about the principles of Syria’s policy, which stems from the directives of President Bashar al-Assad and the interests of the Syrian, to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence and reject foreign interference in its internal affairs, emphasizing on the fight against terrorism and the restoration of the occupied Arab territories, especially the occupied Syrian Golan.
He pointed to the evolving relations between Syria and the Russian Federation, which reflect the unity of the positions of the two peoples and the two countries. He expressed the Syrian leadership satisfaction with the Russian initiative to start preliminary consultations to resolve the crisis through a preliminary consultative dialogue in Moscow and continued consultation and coordination with the Russian side in this context.
Miqdad also talked about the plan put by the UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura entitled “Aleppo First”, stressing Syria’s openness to ideas ensuring the fight against terrorism and to support local reconciliation, so as to end the bloodshed of Syrians and end to support for terrorists.
He explained that Syria’s relationship with the UN is based on ensuring the interests of the Syrian people, stressing the need to implement UN Security Council and, in particular resolutions 2170 and 2178 on fighting al0Qaeda affiliated terrorist organizations including Daesh, and al-Nusra Front.
“Thanks to the cohesion of the Syrian people, the brave army and wise leadership of President al-Assad, Syria has continued to be steadfast, proceeding toward achieving victory over the enemies of the homeland, ” Miqdad emphasized.
Other PA members stressed the importance of strengthening the Syrian position internationally, develop relations with friendly countries, and to fight terrorism and abide by a political solution, in parallel of achieving national reconciliation.
The meeting was attended by PA deputy speaker Dr. Hassan Fahmy.
