Miqdad: Change in the international political atmosphere towards the Syrian issue

Damascus (ST): Foreign and Expatriates  Minister Dr. Faisal Al-Miqdad, affirmed that the change in the international political atmosphere towards the Syrian issue in general and the decline in the hostile targeting of Syria in the official discourse of most of the member states of the United Nations came clearly during the work of the General Assembly and reflected what the Syrian Arab Army had achieved in cooperation with allies and friends on the ground in the field of combating terrorism and restoring security and stability throughout the country.

In a statement, in response to a question about the importance of the meetings held by the Syrian delegation with foreign ministers, whether Arab or international, and the activities in New York, politically for Syria: Syria has always been open to honest and impartial political initiatives or efforts to help it get out of the crisis despite obstacles set by countries that have no interest in continuing these efforts in the direction that achieves stability in Syria. With what it has achieved in its war against terrorism, Syria will not submit to pressure and will not accept any political conditions

He added: Despite the repercussions and restrictions related to Covid 19, during our participation in the opening of the work of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, we held a large number of bilateral meetings with many foreign ministers of Western and Arab countries and a number of officials in the United Nations, and it can be said that these meetings are unprecedented in parallel with Syria’s active presence during public meetings, it is an important indicator of trends on the international scene, which has come to realize that Syria, with its national and civilized identity and what it has achieved in its war against terrorism, has made it clear that despite its openness to the return of normal relations, it will not submit to pressure and will not accept any political conditions.

Al-Miqdad continued: With regard to Syria, the most important thing during the work of the General Assembly, whether in the statements of representatives of member states or during the bilateral meetings held on the sidelines of the work of the General Assembly, was the change in the international political atmosphere towards the Syrian issue in general, and of course some well-known countries still practice economic terrorism and impose unilateral measures, but the decline in the hostile targeting of Syria in the official discourse of most member states was clear and reflected what the Syrian Arab Army had achieved in cooperation with allies and friends on the ground in the field of combating terrorism and restoring security and stability to the homeland.

Regarding the importance of the meetings of the Syrian delegation in New York with some Arab foreign ministers, including Egypt, Miqdad considered that the meetings with them are undoubtedly important and what is certain is that Syria welcomes any initiative to restore normal and warm relations with the brotherly Arab countries, and we look forward to dealing with Arab countries in accordance with the principles of mutual respect and common interests.

In response to a question about the results of effective Syrian participation in the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly, Miqdad said: The most important thing for Syria is that we affirm, through our participation in such international forums, that we are a sovereign country and that what our people have gone through during the past ten years did not weaken us despite its difficulty, but rather affirmed our ability to confront threats posed by terrorism, economic pressures, and sieges, in return for defending our national principles and principles.

Al-Miqdad indicated that it was clear during the high-level week of the opening of the work of the General Assembly that the atmosphere has become more positive, and we will continue our battle against terrorism unti
