On March 27th, the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Eng. Muhammad Hassan Qatna, met with a delegation from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), represented by the General Authority for Fisheries in the Mediterranean.
Both sides discussed the fisheries and fish farming in Syria and the possibility of expanding in the field of small family fish farms, in addition to developing and sustaining fish farming in fresh and marine waters for its important role in strengthening food security in Syria.
Minister Qatana stated that an integrated strategy has been adopted to develop the reality of fisheries, targeting the production of 60,000 tons.
In turn, the General Authority for Fisheries in the Mediterranean Dr. Hossam Hamza indicated that there are important capabilities to develop the fisheries sector in Syria.
Dr. Hossam Hamza said that the role of the authority is to support this important strategic sector that contributes to food security and improve the living conditions of farmers and citizens.
Director General of the General Authority for Fisheries and Aquarium Dr. Abdul Latif Ali, indicated that preparations were made to establish a hatchery for marine fish at the General Authority for Fish Resources in Al-Sunne Research Center.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Rami Al-Ali.
