Dushanbe, (ST) – For the second day in a row, the activities and sessions of the Second International Conference of the (International Decade of Action on Water) for Sustainable Development 2018-2028 continue with the participation of Syria.
Minister of Water Resources Dr. Tammam Raad, Head of the Syrian delegation to the conference stressed in a statement to SANA the importance of participating in international conferences related to water resources in light of the climatic changes that the world is witnessing, the increasing demand for water, and the challenges facing the Syrian Arab Republic as a result of the Turkish regime’s reduction in the imports of the Euphrates River and its effects environmental, social and economic. He also stresses the importance of enhancing cooperation with brotherly and friendly countries through side meetings.
Raad said that during the conference, the challenges facing the water sector in Syria were presented, including the destruction and sabotage of water facilities by terrorist organizations. He indicated that there are also the difficulties facing the Syrian government in rehabilitating these water facilities due to the unjust and unilateral coercive economic measures against the Syrian people.
The Syrian delegation participated in the special session held today to discuss the challenges facing the interdependence of water, energy and food to ensure the sustainability of water resources and ecosystems, and the need to achieve water security through data integration and close cooperation between different sectors in conditions of water scarcity.
The delegation also participated in the session on finding scientific solutions and using technological tools to solve water problems and the need to spread knowledge on a large scale so that everyone could participate in achieving water security.
The conference, which opened yesterday, aims to support sustainable development and integrated management of water resources and to cooperate internationally on plans related to this field, including those contained in the 2030 sustainable development plan.
