Minister of Justice Dr. Muthar Al-Wais discussed with the UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Najat Rushdi, the prospects for coordination and cooperation in developing the legislative and judicial framework in the country.
During the meeting at the ministry’s headquarters, Dr. Al-Wais explained the extent of damage to the infrastructure of judicial facilities, as well as the destruction and neglect they have suffered due to the previous regime over the past years.
He emphasized the importance of providing practical support from the international community to Syria across various sectors and institutions, particularly in the fields of justice and law, and the necessity of lifting sanctions imposed on the Syrian economy, which have negative repercussions on citizens and their living conditions.
The Minister of Justice pointed out that the constitutional declaration criminalizes torture and enforced disappearance, and that the Public Prosecution affiliated with the Ministry of Justice supervises arrest operations.
He noted that any violations in this regard will be dealt with strictly, adding that access to any detainee is possible through a request to the Ministry of Justice or the Ministry of Interior.
Regarding the recent events in Jaramana and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya in Damascus Countryside, the minister stressed the state’s determination to enforce the law, criminalize attacks on religious sanctities, and hold accountable anyone engaging in unlawful activities that incite strife, mobilization, and destabilization.
For her part, Rushdi affirmed full support for the sovereignty of the state and the rule of law in Syria.
She highlighted the necessity of achieving stability in the country, which would positively reflect on the overall stability of the region
.She expressed the readiness of the United Nations to provide assistance in developing various sectors, particularly concerning justice and law, following meetings with different ministries to identify overall necessary needs.
