Members of the UN Security Council call for an end to the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people
On October 9th, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Benjamaa, stressed that the Security Council has failed to hold the Israeli occupation accountable and this occupation has become more daring in its crimes against the Palestinian people in flagrant violation of international law.
Benjamaa said: “If we do not act now, the Middle East will plunge into an unprecedented war.”
Benjamaa added in a speech during a Security Council session : “Those who remain silent or justify today cannot claim to defend the rule of law tomorrow because there will be no law,” noting that the two horrific briefings by “OCHA” and “UNRWA” have highlighted the reality of the merciless Israeli war machine, especially in the northern Gaza Strip.
Benjamaa warned of the looming famine and the insufficient number of trucks reaching Gaza, saying: It is time to impose a ceasefire in Gaza and stop implementing the displacement plans pursued by the occupation authorities, recalling the killing of 222 UNRWA employees and the destruction or damage to two-thirds of the agency’s buildings.
For his part, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, indicated that Gaza has become the largest open prison in the world, subjected to continuous bombing and aid is being prevented, indicating that “Israel’s attack on UNRWA has a negative impact on the entire region and on the establishment of the Palestinian state, and we have no right to allow that to pass.
Nebenzia said: “How can we call on the United Nations to perform its humanitarian mission in light of the ongoing bombing, which hinders the delivery of aid, in light of the assassination of humanitarian workers and in light of the threat of closure of UNRWA?.”
He stressed that the current catastrophic situation can only be resolved through diplomatic means to put an end to the bloodshed and ensure the ability of the Palestinians to exercise their right to self-determination.
In turn, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, called on the Israeli occupation to stop using humanitarian aid as a weapon, lift the blockade on Gaza and restrictions on humanitarian access, and fully cooperate with the United Nations and other humanitarian agencies.
He expressed his country’s concern about the occupation’s plans targeting UNRWA, describing its role as indispensable and irreplaceable.
He noted that two million people in Gaza are struggling under blockade and under fire.
He said: “Gaza has become hell on earth. We cannot accept that death and hunger have become the new norm in Gaza.”
