On October 1, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Faisal Al-Mikdad met with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)’s Administrator Achim Steiner in New York, on the sidelines of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.
They discussed constructive cooperation between the Syrian Arab Republic and the UNDP and the projects that the UNDP is implementing in Syria.
They agreed on the importance of continuing and strengthening this cooperation in order to meet the Syrian people’s needs.
During the meeting, Mikdad welcomed the appointment of the new UNDP’s representative in Syria, stressing the need to work in sustainable development, humanitarian relief and rebuilding tracks.
Mikdad stressed that Syria is counting on cooperation with UNDP to improve conditions of living, supply basic services for citizens and create conditions for the return of refugees.
He said that the UNDP’s role in this process must remain free from politicization and pressure exerted by Western countries.
For his part, the UNDP’s Administrator said that the UNDP’s works are primarily developmental, pointing to Syria’s achievement of the first national report of the Sustainable Development Goals.
