GENEVA, (ST)- Meetings of the 135th Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) kicked off on Sunday with the participation of the Syrian Arab Republic led by Speaker of the People’s Assembly Hadiya Abbas.
Abbas, during the consultative meeting of the IPU Islamic group held on the sidelines of the IPU session, called for supporting the item presented by the Syrian People’s Assembly relating the negative impacts of the unjust unilateral economic sanctions imposed by the West on the Syrian people and which are being used by some countries as a tool of political pressure, but they mainly harm the basic human rights of the Syrians.
Participants in the meeting discussed issues on the agenda of the IPU session and the need to adopt a unified stance by the union’s Islamic group towards issues of common interest.
In the same context, member of the People’s assembly Ashwaq Abbas took part in the Women Parliamentarians Forum which discusses women’s role in parliament in addition to enhancing women participation in political life.
The five-day IPU session discusses parliament’s role in the urgent response to human rights violations, women rights and women participation in political process in addition to the union’s committee’s reports on security, peace, sustainable development, finance, trade and UN affairs.
