Maximum alert declared in Khartoum to face floods

KHARTOUM- The Wali (governor) of Khartoum State Ayman Khaled Nimir has declared a state of maximum alert in Khartoum to ward off the impacts of the recent floods which engulfed several areas in the state due to unprecedented rise of the Nile water levels, the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA) reported on Sunday.

Nimir said during SUNA regular forum in Khartoum that the scale of the disaster that hit the state is much greater than its capabilities, pointing out that 5,000 houses had partially or totally collapsed in Karary, Khartoum, Jebel Awlia, Khartoum North, eastern Nile and Omdurman localities.

“This unprecedented rise of the Nile water levels caused the loss of a number of lives, as well as damage to areas close to the Nile in Sudan” Nimir indicated.

He underlined that the state’s emergency room works around the clock in coordination with concerned parties to ease the health impacts of the floods and to find radical solutions for the floods- affected areas.
