March for environment and afforestation campaign within the activities of the National Environment Day

On the occasion of the National Environment Day, which is held under the slogan “Together to confront climate change,” Damascus Governorate organized an event that included an environmental march from the Umayyad Square towards Tishreen Park, and a campaign of afforestation, awareness and cleaning, in which the directorates of parks and hygiene, civil associations, voluntary teams and popular organizations participated.
Deputy Head of the Executive Office in Damascus Governorate, Engineer Ali Al-Mobaid, explained in a press statement the importance of promoting a culture of environmental preservation and community participation in it, on the cleanliness of streets and public parks, and planting trees that give an aesthetic view and contribute to purifying the air of cities, calling for raising the level of environmental awareness among individuals in the society and identifying the dangers to the environment and ways to mitigate them.
In turn, a member of the Executive Office of the Health, Environment and Civil Defense Sector, Dr. Mahmoud Karim stressed the importance of increasing green spaces and taking care of gardens and their cleanliness, as they are an outlet for citizens and the green lung of the city, calling for the intensification of campaigns to plant trees and take care of them because of their environmental and aesthetic benefits.
The General Supervisor of the Services Complex and the Director of Hygiene in Damascus Governorate, pointed out the importance of these environmental activities that contribute to raising environmental awareness and maintaining public cleanliness, as a cleaning campaign was carried out for the Umayyad Square, Tishreen Park and several different axes in the city, in conjunction with the launch of the National Environment Day activities, stressing the importance of cooperating with cleaners and not throwing waste and dirt except in the places designated for it.
For his part, the director of parks in the governorate, Eng. Somer Farfour, indicated that laurel trees, jasmine and ornamental plants were planted, which add an aesthetic character in the gardens, in addition to carrying out tree pruning and weeding green spaces in Tishreen Park and a number of city parks.
The director of the environment in the governorate, Engineer Hadi Awad, explained that the celebration program, which has been launched today, and will last for three days, also includes a campaign to clean, rehabilitate and weed the garden of the Environmental Club in the Environment Directorate, and an exhibition of waste recycling, in addition to honoring workers from the governorate’s directorates.
A number of participants stressed that preserving the environment and the cleanliness of the city is everyone’s responsibility, and cooperation and participation in the works that serve the city and maintain its cleanliness must be strengthened, calling for the intensification of afforestation and cleanliness campaigns throughout the year round.
