Mansour calls for immediate international action to stop the Israeli aggression on the city of Jenin

New York, (ST) – The Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations Riyad Mansour called on the UN Security Council to assume its responsibilities and stop the Israeli aggression against the city of Jenin and its camp. He also called for an immediate action to implement UN’s relevant resolutions, including resolutions 2334 and 904, and all other resolutions related to the protection of civilians, mainly children and women.

In letters he sent to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the President of the Security Council for this month, the United Kingdom, and the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Mansour called for exerting more efforts to help alleviate the dangerous situation and for working urgently to mobilize the capabilities of the United Nations to ensure the protection of the Palestinian people.

In his letters, Mansour noted that the occupation forces stormed into the Jenin refugee camp with more than a thousand soldiers backed by the warplanes, and bombed it with artillery and live ammunition, killing nine Palestinians, including three children, wounding hundreds of civilians, including children, and destroying many homes and infrastructure. They also cut off electricity and water to the camp, which exacerbated the humanitarian situation.

Mansour pointed out that although this type of premeditated killing shows Israel’s blatant targeting of Palestinian children and youth, yet it is still not included in the list of violators of children’s rights. He stressed the need for an immediate international and regional action to stop this dangerous escalation.

Mansour called on the International Criminal Court to seed up its investigation on the situation in Palestine. He stressed that all perpetrators, including all political and military officials and settlers in the Israeli occupation entity, must be held accountable for their crimes and work to prevent further crimes against the Palestinian people.

UN expresses its deep concern about the Israeli aggression on Jenin

In the same context, the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres expressed his grave concern about the Israeli aggression against the city of Jenin and its camp in the occupied West Bank.

The United Nations News Center quoted Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for Guterres, as saying in a statement: The Secretary-General is concerned about the developments in the situation in Jenin in the West Bank.

In turn, the United Nations envoy to the Middle East, Tor Winsland, described the escalation of occupation in the West Bank as very dangerous.

UNRWA deeply concerned by Israel’s military assault in Jenin refugee camp

Meanwhile, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said it is deeply concerned by the impact of the ongoing Israeli military assault in the densely populated Jenin refugee camp and the damage caused to the infrastructure.

It said five Palestinian refugees were among the 10 killed in the Israeli occupation assault that started yesterday.

In addition, extensive damage to the camp infrastructure was reported, including damage to its water network. Water and electricity services have been interrupted in large areas of the camp, said UNRWA, as many people are in urgent need of food, drinking water and milk powder for children.

UNRWA runs 10 installations, operated by 90 Agency staff members in Jenin camp. All UNRWA installations, including four schools and one health center, were unable to operate due to the large-scale military assault.

UNRWA said it cannot yet confirm if any of its installations were affected, nor can the Agency confirm the final number of casualties among Palestine refugees in Jenin camp, urging action to ensure those injured have access to medical care.
