Maduro: Guaido was involved in masterminding an attempted infiltration of mercenaries into Venezuela and the implementation of a coup

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro affirmed the involvement of right-wing opposition leader Juan Guaido in masterminding the infiltration attempt by a group of mercenaries, including two Americans, into Venezuelan territory last Sunday with the aim of destabilizing the country and carrying out a coup.

“Guaido has reached the point where he wants to kill the president and the military leaders and finished his political rivals. His presence and other opposition figures’ signatures have been confirmed on documents revealed by American mercenary Jordan Guaido,” the website of the Telesur channel quoted Maduro as saying in a televised speech on May 9.

He added that three other mercenaries were arrested as part of the investigation into the operation.

The Venezuelan authorities have arrested 16 people who attempted to infiltrate Venezuela from Colombia, including two former American soldiers named Luc Denman and Iron Berry, and issued international arrest warrants for the US military’s paramedic, Jordan Godro, who is suspected of organizing and training the mercenary group.

Maduro renewed his condemnation of the involvement of the Colombian government headed by Evan Duque in this process.

He said: “ If there were some agencies in Colombia able to investigate independently, they would certainly have obtained evidence of Duque’s involvement in this armed invasion against Venezuela.”

In turn, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Jorge Arias, announced on May 9 that the Venezuelan authorities are studying the option of filing a complaint with the International Criminal Court against the United States and bringing charges against the Duque government for allowing mercenaries to use the Colombian lands for training and planning to invade Venezuela.

On May 4, Maduro announced the arrest of 13 terrorists, including two American citizens, who tried to infiltrate into the Venezuelan lands from Colombia by sea with the aim of destabilizing the country and trying to overthrow the Venezuelan government.

Maduro said that one of the American detainees is a personal guard for US President Donald Trump.
