Luxembourg calls on the European Union countries to recognize the state of Palestine

Brussels, (ST) – Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn called on European Union countries to recognize Palestine as a country.

“The time has come to launch consultations within the European Union on the possibility of all of its members recognizing Palestine,” Asselborn said, in a message he sent to his European counterparts and the new EU foreign policy commissioner, Josep Borrell. Rather, it would be merely to recognize the right of the Palestinian people to their state.”

The move is expected to be discussed during the next meeting of the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council in January, while reports published by media outlets affiliated with the Israeli occupation entity indicated that the latter started diplomatic efforts in order to prevent this step.

Asselborn called last month on Europe to recognize Palestine as a country after the condemnation of the European Union countries except Hungary, the statement of US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo last month in which he renewed the United States’ blatant bias towards the Israeli occupation entity by declaring that the American administration does not consider Israeli settlements incompatible with international law, ignoring all this International decisions.

It is mentioned that more than 135 countries in the world recognize Palestine as a state, including Russia, China and a number of eastern European countries and Arab and Islamic countries.
