Lebanese, Irish Presidents Call for Speeding up Finding Political Solution to Crisis in Syria

BEIRUT, (ST)- President Michel Aoun of Lebanon has reiterated the need to find a solution to the crisis in Syria to help the displaced Syrians in Lebanon return home.

Following his meeting on Thursday with his Irish counterpart Michael Higgins in Beirut, Aoun said that talks between him and Higgins focused on the importance of speeding up the process of finding a political settlement  in Syria to solve the Syrian refugees crisis.

In a different context, President Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon’s adherence to respecting international resolution No. 1701 which provides for the Israeli occupation withdrawal from the lands it is still occupying. He reiterated his country’s right to defend itself against the repeated Israeli violations on the Lebanese sovereignty.

On his part, the Irish president said that one of the pillars of the bilateral relations between his country and Lebanon is the Irish long-term commitment to the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
