Le Pen: France’s Decision to Sever Diplomatic Ties with Syria Big Mistake

BEIRUT, (ST)- The French Presidential Candidate Marine Le Pen has stressed that France’s decision to sever diplomatic relations with Syria was a grave mistake, vowing to restore ties with Syria if she becomes a president.

“President Bashar Al-Assad was proved to be the only one who managed to resist extremism, the danger from which the French people are currently suffering,” Le Pen told the Lebanese L’Orient Le Jour newspaper, adding that several countries including France have tried to weaken President Al-Assad.

“If I win the elections and become the President of France I will support President Al-Assad in his struggle against fundamentalists,” Le Pen said, according to the Syrian news Agency SANA.

She added “I am a French and I don’t believe that President Al-Assad and the Syrian government pose any threat to my country.”

She ruled out any military intervention in Syria, clarifying that France won’t interfere if it doesn’t get a request from the Syrian government.”

French presidential elections are scheduled to be held in April.
