Lavrov: United States using ISIS to impede political solution in Syria

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stressed that the United States is using ISIS terrorist organization as a tool to impede reaching a political solution in Syria.

Lavrov’s remarks came during the Valdai Club Conference in Moscow on Wednesday.

Lavrov said that the United States continues to plunder Syrian oil and other resources and to escalate tension to destabilize the country.

He reiterated the need to resolve the crisis in Syria politically in accordance with UN Resolution 2254, “We should give the opportunity for the Syrians to reach an agreement on self-determination, ” he said.

He indicated that some countries are trying to link the issue of the upcoming presidential elections in Syria to the changes that may occur to the political process, including the work of Committee of Discussing the Constitution, noting that the committee’s work cannot be linked to these elections because the work of this committee was not mentioned in Resolution 2254.

UN Resolution 2254 affirms that the Syrians are the only ones who decide the future of their country, without any external interference, and the terrorist organizations are outside any political process.
