Lavrov to Pedersen: The crisis in Syria must be resolved politically

MOSCOW, (ST)_ Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has reiterated that the crisis in Syria must be resolved politically in accordance with UN resolution No. 2254 through Syrian-Syrian dialogue and without foreign intervention.

During today’s meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen in Moscow, Lavrov said: “Russia, as a guarantor state in Astana talks on Syria, supports UN efforts to facilitate the work of the mini-constitutional committee for discussing the Syrian constitution under UN resolution No.2254.”

Lavrov described the third round of the mini-constitutional committee, which concluded last Saturday in Geneva, as ” successful and very fruitful”.

UN resolution No. 2254, which was endorsed in December, 2025, stipulates that the Syrian people will decide the future of Syria without foreign intervention.

The Russian FM underscored the need to preserve the unity and sovereignty of Syria and to go ahead with fighting terrorism. He referred to the fact that there are a lot of difficulties that face the humanitarian issue in Syria, especially amid the outbreak of Coronavirus.

Lavrov asserted the need to lift the western coercive measures being imposed on Syria.
