Lavrov: The West must recognize its responsibility for the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria

On June 21st , Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that Western countries are responsible for the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria.

Lavrov called on the Western countries to shoulder their responsibility and to abandon unilateral interpretation of humanitarian issues.

During a joint press conference with the Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Helga Schmid, Lavrov stressed the need to involve the Syrian government in aid transfers.

Lavrov said that Syria is ready for this, but “unfortunately our partners in the United Nations and others have not yet been able to coordinate on this clear position.”

Regarding the American occupation of areas in Syria, Lavrov pointed out that this occupation is plundering oil and gas resources and using their financial revenues to “increase separatist tendencies there and strike the unity of the Syrian state.”

“If we consider that a set of these factors affect the humanitarian situation in Syria, they must be discussed and our European and Western partners must abandon the unilateral interpretation of a specific humanitarian issue and recognize the reality of the matter and the humanitarian situation in Syria,” Lavrov said.

Lavrov expressed his solidarity with the positions and rules of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe as it can play a leading role in several areas, including the Atlantic region.

On the other hand, Lavrov reiterated his country’s readiness to work on several axes with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, such as combating terrorism, drug trafficking, organized crime and human trafficking, stressing the importance of the organization’s role in containing the repercussions of the Corona pandemic.
