Lavrov: The West adopts double standard policy towards Syria under Coronavirus crisis

Russian Foreign Minister Sergy Lavrov had renewed his condemnation of the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States and some European countries on Syria, including the so-called “Caesar Act”, particularly in the light of the Corona pandemic crisis.

In a statement via video during the International Conference titled (The Mediterranean..Rome Dialogue), Lavrov said that “the west adopts a double standard policy toward Syria through refusing to assist Syria in humanitarian issues and economically suffocating the country under the Coronavirus crisis.”
He pointed out that the Americans and the Europeans are making baseless accusations against Syria to justify tge continuous imposition of these coercive measures against the Syrians.

The Russian top diplomat reiterated the illegality of the presence of the US occupation troops on the Syrian territories, stressing that “Syria is making positive steps regarding political solution , but these efforts are met by the illegal presence of American forces on Syrian lands which impedes restoring the country’s unity.”

“Syria has uprooted terrorism from most of its territories,” said Lavrov, affirming that reconstructing the country and returning the displaced Syrians to their areas, which were targeted by terrorism, necessitates the efforts of the entire international community.

He regretted that due to US pressure, many European countries refrained from participating in  the recently-held International Conference on the Return of Syrian Refugees in Damascus, noting that even the UN reduced its participation to the role of observer.
