TASHKENT, (ST)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has affirmed that the fight against terrorism in Syria must continue until the complete elimination of terrorism and the achievement of a political solution to the crisis.
Speaking to students of the Institute of International Relations in Uzbekistan on Thursday, Lavrov talked about developments in the countries of the region.
He said that “restoring statehood” in Libya is still out of reach and that “the US reckless actions in the region have led to serious consequences such as the destruction of Iraq and Libya.”
Since NATO aggression in 2011, Libya has been witnessing a state of chaos and lawlessness because of the spread of weapons and terrorist organizations. The dispute over power in the country is currently between two main parties: the Accord Government led by al-Sarraj and the government operating in eastern Libya which is supported by the House of Representatives in the city of Tobruk and the Libyan army led by Marshal Khalifa Hifter.
In another context, Lavrov indicated that the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear deal with Iran has escalated the situation in the region and created an atmosphere of tension.
