On September 25, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the double standards used by some countries complicate the fight against terrorism, calling on the international community and organizations to unify their efforts in this regard.
During the UN Security Council session on the UN Partnership with Regional Anti-Terrorism Organizations,Lavrov referred to the importance of the President Vladimir Putin’s 2015 counter-terrorism initiative based on the UN Charter and international law without any politicization or preconditions.
Lavrov said that the international counterterrorism organizations have a long history of fighting terrorism, stressing the need to continue their work to maintain the world’s peace and security.
He expressed concern about the influx of foreign terrorists into Central Asia and the recruitment of people by various terrorist organizations in the region, especially those associated with ISIS.
Lavrov noted the important role of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), which has focused on national security and counter-terrorism since 2000, and it cooperates with UN counter-terrorism committees and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization( SCO)’s in fighting extremism and terrorism.
Lavrov pointed out that the Collective Security Treaty Organization, which was established in 2002 and includes Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, seeks to combat terrorist activities and ideology and addresses the return of terrorists from the areas of terrorism.
