MOSCOW, (ST) –”negotiations represent the shortest way for settlement in Syria, “said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov,according to RIA NOVOSTI.
Lavrov’s remark was made during ,a joint press conference held in Moscow on Tuesday, with US State Secretary John Kerry .
Larvov asserted that he and Kerry agreed that Moscow and Washington should urage finding a political solution for the crisis in Syria, adding that there might be an international conference for developing the Geneva statement at the end of this month.
“there is a need to preserve the safety of Syria and its territorial integrity and the need to convince representatives of the government and the opposition to hold negotiations, “underscored Lavrov.
He noted that from the beginning, the Syrian government agreed to adopt the Geneva statement and formed a committee with full authority to materialize it, while the opposition didn’t even announce until now who will participate in negotiations on its behalf to implement the statement.
For his part, Kerry said that the Geneva statement is a very important path towards peace.
Kerry underlined that efforts must be exerted to combat terrorism noting that terrorist acts are taking place in Syria.
