Lavrov: Statements Blaming Syrian Government for Aleppo blast “blasphemous”

Dushanbe, Tajikistan, (ST) – Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergi Lavrov on Thursday strongly criticized US statements blaming the Syrian government for the terrorist act which targeted Aleppo University on Tuesday claiming the lives of more than 80 people.

He described the statements as “blasphemous”.

In a news conference in the Tajik Capital ,Dushanbe, Lavrov said he yesterday watched a report on the CNN claiming that the Syrian government forces are responsible for Aleppo criminal blast.

“I can’t imagine any thing more blasphemous,” Lavrov told reporters.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Russian foreign ministry blamed the armed terrorist groups for the explosion.

Replying a question on whether the difference in interpreting Aleppo events may affect the Russian-US relations, Lavrov pointed out “I can’t understand how a terrorist act be a pretext for differences,” stressing that presidents of many countries as well as the United Nations have described what happened in Aleppo as a terrorist act.

The Russian top diplomat reiterated that Moscow was against the Swiss initiative on referring the “Syrian file” to the International Criminal Court.

“We should answer the question: What is more important for us?” If the most important for us is to condemn someone, then it’s one logic,” Lavrov said, stressing that the most important issue is to focus on halting violence.
